“As of 2023, India’s cattle population is estimated to be 194.2 million, and the buffalo population is estimated to be 113.3 million. This is based on the 2019 census, which reported that India had 192.49 million cattle and 109.85 million buffalo.

Here are some other details about the cattle and buffalo population in India:

Indigenous and exotic cattle

In 2019, 142.11 million cattle in India were indigenous, while 50.42 million were exotic or crossbred. 

Female cattle

In 2019, 145.12 million cattle in India were female, which was an 18% increase from 2012. 

Milch animals

In 2019, there were 125.34 million milch animals in India, which was an increase of 6% from the previous census. 

Rashtriya Gokul Mission

In 2014, the government established the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) to conserve and develop indigenous breeds of cows and buffaloes. 

The cow is considered a sacred animal by Hindus in India, and is associated with several gods and goddesses.
